Brown Sugar Apple Pie

Oh, guys. Have I got an awesome apple pie recipe for you. Where most apple pie recipes call for white sugar only, I add some extra flavor by adding brown sugar too. At first glance, it might not seem like it makes much of a difference. But TRUST me, it gives it so much more flavor.

Ready to get started? Here’s what you need:

Ingredients

3 lbs. (6-8) Granny Smith or Fuji apples, cored, peeled and sliced

1 Tbsp. lemon juice

1 1/2 stick of butter (3/4 c. butter)

4 1/2 Tbsp. all-purpose flour

1/3 c. water

3/4 c. granulated sugar

3/4 c. packed brown sugar

1 1/2 tsp. cinnamon

1/4 tsp. nutmeg

1 tsp. salt

1 refrigerated pie crust, top and bottom, or make your own (here’s a great recipe)

Directions

  1. Preheat the oven to 425 degrees.
  2. Peel, core and slice apples. Toss in lemon juice (it keeps the apples from browning) and set aside in a large mixing bowl.

  1. Melt butter in saucepan over low heat. Whisk in flour, 1 Tbsp at a time until the mixture forms a roux (a paste).
  2. Add water, brown sugar, granulated sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg and salt. Bring to a boil for 3 minutes.
  3. Reduce temp and let simmer for 5-7 minutes, stirring constantly.
  4. Pour mixture over apples and mix well.farmers-market-apple-pie-mixture
  5. Place one pie crust in the bottom of a lightly greased 9-inch pie plate. Pour the apple filling into the the pie plate.pie-filling-in-pie-plate
  6. Make a lattice top (for instructions, click here) and cover the top of the pie. Pinch the edges of the crust with your fingers and cover with aluminum foil. This prevents burning.foil-covered-apple-pie
  7. Bake at 425 degrees for 15 minutes. Reduce heat to 350 degrees without opening, and continue baking for 40 minutes.
  8. When there is 10 minutes left on the timer, remove the foil.
  9. The pie is done when the crust is golden brown and the filling is bubbling.
  10. Allow pie to cool completely before serving.farmers-market-apple-pie-finished

You are going to LOVE how the house smells when your apple pie is cooking. Serve with ice cream, whipped cream or a slice of cheese (this old school combo gives it a savory-sweet flavor).
